Afcon demands global respect, opens a new chapter for African football
Liverpool, amid a race to win the league title, lost Mané and Salah as well as Naby Keita , while Arsenal lost Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Crystal Palace lost Zaha, Leicester City lost Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho .losing some of his key players to Afcon, which he described as a “little” tournament. However, Klopp’s concerns appear to have been misplaced. Liverpool was still in second place in the league by the beginning of February. They had not lost ground.
This time, however, CAF resisted Europe’s pressure more forcefully than ever. It issued a statement that the dates were set in stone and that the decision to stage Afcon in January and February was “alpha and omega”. The tournament was not going to be moved in spite of Europe’s pressure and rumours. Then current players and managers also chimed in with their support.
