Manchester City go into today’s match at Burnley two points behind title rivals Liverpool, knowing a victory at Turf Moor will take them back to the top
With just three matches remaining, both title chasers know that anything but maximum points will give their rivals a major advantage.
Burnley have hit a rich vein of form in recent weeks, winning three of their last four matches and drawing the other at Chelsea. They can also look back at four victories against the then reigning Premier League champions . Ahead of today’s game, Guardiola thanked Liverpool for ensuring City have to be at their best. After winning the title last season with a record 100 points, City can amass 98 this time around if they win their three remaining matches. Liverpool can reach 97.
But while most of the focus is, unsurprisingly, geared towards the title race, the battle for the Champions League places is as thrilling. Currently, Spurs and Chelsea occupy third and fourth place, respectively, but Arsenal and Manchester United are also in the hunt. This prompted United to give him a three-year contract at the end of March. At the time Ed Woodward, executive vice-chairperson of Manchester United, said: “Since coming in as caretaker manager in December, the results Ole has delivered speak for themselves.”
