Advance: Actor turned teacher relishes reprisal of cherished role as Poe yyc
Nevermore is starting its new tour at Vertigo Theatre from May 6 through June 4 which is significant for Shpeley because, after Nevermore ended its run at Vertigo in 2011, he made Calgary his home base for almost three years.
“It was so exciting and so humbling. New York is the mecca of theatre in North America and here was our little show performing there. I also remember the thrill of walking into the lobby of the newly renovated Wintergarden Theatre in Toronto. It’s another moment where it was difficult to believe we were really there.”
“Seeing everyone again and hearing their voices was beautiful, magical and so emotional. I never thought I’d get to do this show again so I was almost in a state of disbelief and it was such a wonderful feeling. From that first day 15 years ago when we read the play, we knew Jonathan had an amazing vision but he is such a generous collaborator. He’d take what we did in rehearsals as an ensemble and incorporate it into the play. It’s such a rich script.
