A new study has found a link between a common disorder and a increased chance of developing dementia later in life

Adults with a specific disorder are three times more likely to develop dementia according to a new study. Published in the journal JAMA Network Open, Rutgers University scientists followed more than 100,000 older adults over 17 years.

The research involved a deep analysis of data from a sample of more than 100,000 individuals monitored from 2003 to 2020. It aimed to assess the prevalence of dementia in two distinct groups: those with ADHD and those without, as they advanced in age. The study's senior author explained: "Physicians, clinicians and caregivers who work with older adults should monitor ADHD symptoms and associated medications." Research from the study also suggested that the use of psychostimulants later in life as part of ADHD treatment could potentially lower the likelihood of dementia in adults diagnosed with the disorder.
