Exclusive: Adrien Brody shares the real-world inspiration behind his mysterious character in Wes Anderson’s latest film, Asteroid City.
Adrien Brody is in Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, but you wouldn’t know it from the trailers. Set in an American desert town in 1955, Asteroid City tells the tale of a life-changing event that occurs during a Junior Stargazer convention that unites a disparate group of travelers, military men, and more. The filmmaker’s unique aesthetic eye and dry humor are present in full force, making Asteroid City likely to become one of the most rewatchable Wes Anderson movies.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Another Wes Anderson trend that continues in Asteroid City is the use of an all-star ensemble cast. The change in Asteroid City, however, is that many of the film’s most recognizable faces—Adrien Brody, Edward Norton, and Bryan Cranston--have been essentially omitted from marketing materials. Thankfully, during a recent interview with Screen Rant, Brody teased his character by sharing his inspiration for the role.
Adrien Brody: I feel like there's such a palpable love of storytelling and performance art, and of that era in particular in this film. There are aspects of honoring the theater, and television work, and acting, and direction. Elia Kazan was one of the people that spoke to me in this era; that was someone that really had those qualities that I felt my character possessed.
Why Adrien Brody Hasn’t Been in Asteroid City Trailers Like with other Wes Anderson movies, there is more to Asteroid City than meets the eye. It’s best to know as little about the direction that Anderson has taken with the film , but Brody’s character is ultimately a part of something grander than Asteroid City may appear at first glance to contain.
Asteroid City marks Brody’s fifth collaboration with Anderson. He was one of 10 recurring collaborators on The French Dispatch, the director’s last film, and also appeared in Grand Budapest Hotel, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, and The Darjeeling Limited. For those who have noticed Brody’s conspicuous absence from the film’s marketing materials, never fear; Brody is very much an integral part of Asteroid City.
