THE new Speaker had to face several questions on whether there were new rules in the August House, which now has many new faces.

Among those wondering about certain changes was Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong , who wanted Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Johari Abdul to clarify if there was a new ruling about supplementary questions raised by MPs.

“Under Standing Order 24, there is no need for MPs to press the notification button when seeking to ask a second supplementary question after the minister finishes answering. It is the Speaker’s prerogative to decide which MP is allowed to ask the question when they stand up. “I noticed seven to eight MPs pressing the notification button even before the minister could finish his answer,” he said when raising the question to Johari before debates resumed in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday on the motion of thanks for the Royal Address.Johari joked with Dr Wee that he had known the Ayer Hitam MP for 15 years and could easily recognise him in the House.“It’s akin to allowing them to ‘chup’ and ask their question,” he added.

Khoo Poay Tiong wanted to know if Johari had made a new ruling or allowed for flexibility concerning written questions submitted by MPs, that must not be more than 40 words.“I want a ruling from the Speaker, or is this a new flexibility given,” Khoo said.He added that the Dewan Rakyat secretariat is looking at adopting a system used by the Kedah state assembly, which automatically shortens questions submitted by elected representatives if they exceed a fixed number of words.
