Lo cierto es que el libro es una meditación calmada sobre la vejez, la pérdida y la memoria, que tiene más de ejercicio literario que de apresurada despedida.
Fue Hustvedt quien hizo el anuncio, el pasado marzo, del cáncer que padece su marido, aunque de momento no se sabe qué tipo de cáncer es ni cuál es el estado actual del escritor. Hustvedt escribe de vez en cuando en su cuenta de Instagram sobre el tratamiento de su marido, al que se refiere como la 'tierra del cáncer', un 'territorio confuso y traicionero'.
