The gender gap in cybersecurity is a canyon, ESET Southern Africa CEO Carey van Vlaanderen has some thoughts on shrinking it.
CEO of ESET Southern Africa, Carey van Vlaanderen has offered up advice for how organisations can foster gender diversity in information security. While this is an improvement compared to 2019 where just 20 percent of cybersecurity professionals were women, 35 percent isn’t all that much of an improvement.
The first recommendation is reassessing the pathways into the profession. Not every cybersecurity role requires a degree that takes years to earn. Instead we need to look at alternative routes into cybersecurity including internships and apprenticeships.“Structured mentorship programs are essential because they help women entering the field feel supported with opportunities to grow within the cybersecurity space.
“This includes ensuring women have access to training and skills development programs to help them advance their cybersecurity careers. Creating an environment that prioritises continuous professional growth and development means the industry can retain skilled professionals by aligning individual career aspirations with organisational goals,” she adds.
