Adam: France demands Hassan Diab — but won't extradite accused priest

The issue came to a head recently after Sen. Marc Gold let slip that an extradition request has been received by the government and is “being examined.” Gold has since said he misspoke, but it is clear that France wants Diab back behind bars.

There are countries such as Russia, Austria, Australia, Germany, Japan, China and Switzerland, as well as France, that do not extradite their citizens. But Canada does, and France is taking advantage of us. We like to think of Canada as a country that believes in the rule of law, and it does. Our values therefore demand that we not harbour a citizen who commits a crime in another country.

Rivoire worked in Nunavut from the 1960s until 1993, when he apparently left for France. Accused of sexually assaulting children in the 1970s, he was charged in February 2022, by which time he was already out of the country. In denying Canada’s extradition request, France said Rivoire was a French citizen when the alleged crimes were committed and therefore could not be sent to Canada.

So again, why should we send a Canadian to be imprisoned for life in France after what most believe to have been a show trial, when that country won’t allow its citizen to face justice in our courts? What makes a French citizen worthy of protection, but not a Canadian? France is protecting its citizen, so why can’t we protect our own? Especially one who has endured what goes for French justice and, even then, was cleared once before? How much more must he...

The rule of law doesn’t isn’t a one-way street. All legal issues aside, Canada should play it the way France is. Our government should stand up for a Canadian citizen the way France is standing up for a French citizen.
