Activists demand justice from 21-year-old accused of slaughtering six sex workers
The Johannesburg Magistrates' Court on Tuesday was filled to the brim with scores of sex workers’ rights activists with placards reading “sex work is real work”, and “my body, my business”.
This was against the backdrop of the first court appearance of a 21-year-old man linked to multiple dead bodies understood to be sex workers that were discovered in a state of decomposition at a panel beating factory in Selby, Johannesburg, on Sunday. Magistrate Betty Khumalo told him it was important that he could comprehend his rights, and was considered innocent until proven guilty. “Since it is your first appearance, you have already secured a legal representative from the legal aid board, but it is still this court’s obligation to ensure that you are aware of your rights.
“I have supported him enough. I have done my job. I was doing that to avoid this, but he decided to do this. I mean, he has to suffer. You reap what you sow. What is left for him is to explain and tell the world why he did that.”
