ActionSA is holding the City of Cape Town accountable to violations of a permit, which it says is within the City's own records.
The party’s provincial chairperson in the Western Cape Michelle Wasserman says they have filed criminal charges against the City, after it discovered that the City violated the National Environmental Management: Intergrated Coastal Management Act.
“Through studying the City’s own records, we have unearthed numerous instances of unlawful non-compliance with the permit requirements, with alarming consequences for both public health and the environment” says Wasserman. It is both alarming and disheartening to discover that the entrusted authorities are directly contributing to the devastation of marine life and the potential risks to public health.
Meangwile, the City has announced its planned maintenance schedule for the week which will leave a number of areas with disruptions to their water supply. In Plumstead and Wynberg, conditional assessments are being conducted which could result in lower than usual pressure for up to four hours. The assessments are expected to continue until 30 November 2023.
