ActionSA leaders faced a fiery roadblock on their way to Lily Mine for the annual commemoration of the 2016 tragedy. Burning logs and branches obstructed the road, delaying the commemoration event that honors the three miners still trapped in the lamp room. The party suspects the mine owner and a connected union are behind the blockade but lack concrete evidence.

ActionSA leaders encountered a fiery obstacle on their way to Lily Mine for their annual commemoration event. Burning wooden poles and tree branches blocked the road leading to the mine, delaying the delegation's access. This annual event on February 5th commemorates the tragic loss of three miners who died in a chamber collapse at the mine in 2016.

While at least 76 employees were rescued through a ventilation shaft, Solomon Nyirenda, Yvonne Mnisi, and Pretty Nkambule remained trapped in the lamp room, their bodies yet to be recovered. Solly Moeng, spokesperson for ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba, believes the mine owner and a connected union are responsible for the blockade, although they lack concrete evidence. 'I want to assure the people of this country that whether they like it or not, the Lilly Mine tragedy is not going to be forgotten,' said Mashaba on Wednesday. 'What they are doing is inspiring us to do even more to ensure that ultimately that container is retrieved,' he added. As the nation prepares to remember this somber event, protesters have erected roadblocks leading to the mine. Parliamentarian Lerato Ngobeni expressed her shock at the disruption, especially as the annual commemoration traditionally begins with a prayer session. However, she remains optimistic, stating, 'There is a breakthrough that is coming on this issue, and that is why this is happening. We're not phased at all.' The party asserts that the obstacle will only solidify their determination to compel the government into action. 'Successive ANC-led governments have spent hundreds of millions of rands retrieving the bodies of anti-apartheid fighters who died in other parts of the world,' Mashaba's spokesperson stated. 'The government of national unity went to great lengths getting illegal miners — dead and alive — and most of whom were undocumented foreign nationals, from underground in Stilfontein.'
