Abortion access could shift dramatically in the years to come depending on what happens on Election Day
, 13 states have banned abortion starting at conception.
Another state, Georgia, prohibits the procedure around six weeks of pregnancy. And access to abortion remains legal, but in limbo, in eight states: Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, Utah and Wyoming. However, that landscape could shift dramatically in the years to come depending on what happens on Election Day.
Voters in Michigan could codify the right to abortion in the state’s Constitution, which would likely end the legal uncertainty over the state’s pre-abortion ban. North Carolinians could vote in a Republican supermajority that would allow the state to restrict abortion access. And Ohioans will cast ballots in three state Supreme Court races that will be key to determining whether abortion remains legal in the state, or whether the procedure will be prohibited around six weeks of pregnancy.
