Abongile Matyutyu's story serves as an inspiration to aspiring artists, showcasing the extraordinary opportunities that arise from pursuing one's dreams. inumbernumber

Recently I was watching one of Netflix’s latest local movies, iNumber Number: Jozi Gold, when I had that Leonardo DiCaprio, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood meme moment upon spotting a familiar face. Leonardo DiCaprio in Once Upon a Time in HollywoodI immediately knew I had to talk to the dude about it. I did not know his name but I knew that the man has been at it for a very long time.

I remember that time, whenever it was not my turn, when there was someone on stage, I would feel like they are wasting my time because all I wanted was to be on there. When Matyutyu's parents moved to another part of Winterveld, Slovoville, he faced unexpected shyness and encountered teasing from his new peers. However, fate intervened when he met Bongani Masango, who became his closest friend in the art world.

“I remember we had to use Metrorail, the old yellow one [trains], not this fancy blue one we have now. We would take it from Mabopane station, all the way to here [Joburg] Park Station, from there we would walk to the Market Theatre [near the CBD], attending various festivals and the like,” he says. I somehow ended up doing maths and science at school. I was really great at it.

A call from Masango led Matyutyu back to the stage. After Masango's studies in drama and film at Tshwane University of Technology, he secured a role in the State Theatre's production called Road to Damascus and invited his friend to join him.
