The showrunners of AbbottElementary speak to VF about the series’ season two finale, Taraji P. Henson’s pivotal guest role, and what Ava’s irresponsible principal actually “gives a f—k about.”
: First we start with individual character arcs. So where is this character now? Where is this character going? What path have we set them on? We’ll do that for Janine and then we’ll do it for Gregory. And then we say, “Okay, this is where they’re both at. Realistically, what would happen between these two?”
So for this season, we realized, “Oh, Janine’s not in a place where she can handle a relationship that would be as intense and serious as it would be with Gregory. And it’s actually growth for her to recognize the fact that she’s not ready for that right now.” So, we let the characters...this is a really artsy-fartsy annoying way to describe it...but we let the characters tell us. Please, when you write that, say that I vomited right after I said that. But that’s what we try to do.
Jacob and Ava [Janelle James] are the only characters to notice Janine and Gregory’s burgeoning romance so far. Have you thought about how the other characters will find out?] knows everything that’s going on in the school. So he’s probably the first. We try to think about who already knows, but just doesn’t care and doesn’t say anything—which is, a lot of times, Ava.
Jacob and Gregory in the finale is some of my favorite stuff we did the whole season because, as much as Gregory has trouble having close relationships with people, Jacob is there for him in a way where it’s not transactional at all. He’s just like, “I’m here for you as a friend,” and Gregory needs that in that moment. So, for me, that wouldn’t have been possible had Jacob not known about what was going on.
I’m always fascinated by Ava’s trajectory as an educator. How do you show her growth as a character without making it feel like an afterschool special and keeping her idiosyncrasies intact? If you look at any Ava episode, we’re usually just trying to show the humanity within her. But her priorities never change. She’s never going to be a great administrator because she doesn’t give a fuck about it. She gives a fuck about specific things within that world, and those are consistent.
