Former Republican Dallas County Commissioner J.J. Koch, whoGov. Greg Abbott announced Koch’s appointment Wednesday to Criminal District Court 2, a felony court in the Frank Crowley Criminal Courts Building just outside downtown Dallas.

Koch replaces Democrat Nancy Kennedy who won the November election to the Fifth District Court of Appealswhich hears criminal and civil cases out of Dallas, Collin, Rockwall, Kaufman, Hunt and Grayson counties. Koch is the sole Republican judge in the Dallas County criminal courthouse. He represented District 2 as a commissioner. He fills the remainder of Kennedy’s term which ends Dec. 31, 2024.

Koch was the lone Republican on the commissioner’s court until his loss to lawyer Andrew Sommerman, a Democrat, in November.
