Not great news for the Guards.

Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Aaron Civale throws in the first inning against the Detroit Tigers, May 20, 2022, at Progressive Field.CLEVELAND, Ohio — Guardians starting pitcher Aaron Civale exited Friday’s game against the Detroit Tigers in the seventh inning after coming up sore on his 95th pitch of the night.

Civale had tossed 6 1/3 scoreless innings, striking out three and walking one, but was struggling in the seventh after a one-out single by Javier Baez. Jeimer Candelario followed with a ground ball to the right side of the infield that Civale fielded and then dropped as he tried to get it to Owen Miller at first.

The error allowed Baez to scramble to third. Civale’s hopped off the mound gingerly after the first pitch to Spencer Torkelson and acting manager DeMarlo Hale immediately joined Cleveland trainers on the mound to talk with the right-hander. Civale attempted a simulated pitch with Hale and others watching before giving up the baseball and heading to the clubhouse. Friday’s effort marked Civale’s longest outing of the season and his first quality start.
