The permanent repair costs, however, will not be confirmed until the companies contracted to do the work come back with finalized designs. Both the Coquihalla and Trans-Canada highways were reopened to traffic in January of this year. Temporary repairs on the Nicola Highway continue so that it can reopen, said provincial officials. Brent Ward, an earth sciences professor and co-director of the Centre for Natural Hazards Research at Simon Fraser University, said it’s clear that more frequent and severe weather events such as the atmospheric river that took place in November 2021 must be considered when designing and engineering critical transportation infrastructure for the future.
