Butchery marks on an extinct kangaroo fossil found off the Eyre Peninsula's west coast could reveal a possible human and megafauna relationship.

abc.net.au/news/sa-fossil-reveals-possible-human-megafauna-interaction/101948750Palaeontologists say the discovery of a fossil off Eyre Peninsula's west coast could present possible evidence of human and megafauna interaction between 40,000 and 120,000 years ago.

Brothers Island, located between Coffin Bay and the finger of land known as Little Douglas, was mined in the late 1800s for guano, which is rich in a compound called phosphate. "One of the most air punching moments for me was when we were actually filtering through the material and we pulled out the jaw of a thylacine … which is a very enigmatic animal in Australia."Mr Brown said while it was hard to determine the age of the fossil, the deposit it was in could be up to 120,000 years old.He said there were a number of reasons why the animals may have ended up in the cave site, including to seek shelter or by falling inside.

We can’t forget ‘how tough’ Australians are still doing it after the flood events in 2022We can’t forget ‘how tough’ Australians are still doing it after the flood events in 2022Commentator Steve Price says while we grieve for Turkey, we can’t forget how tough some fellow Australians are still doing it after an unprecedented year of flood events in 2022. 'I know for a fact there are still people in Lismore waiting to get power back on a year later,' Mr Price said. 'State and federal schemes to buy back properties are stuck in red tape deeper than the mud that went through those places. 'Financial support has been hard to access; claims have been denied if you don’t have a receipt—many of them floated down the river with furniture and pets.' Mr Price said the 'human tragedy' in Turkey, which was rocked by a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake, should serve as a reminder to the politicians who promised help after the year of floods but haven’t delivered. 'After all, charity begins at home,' he said.
