Astros righthander Luis Garcia’s season is over after just six starts.
The loss of the promising Garcia, 26, until sometime in the 2024 season at the earliest is quite a blow.Gracia was the runner-up for the 2021 American League Rookie of the Year award, going 11-8 with a 3,48 ERA. Then in the postseason, he tossed 5 ⅔ shutout innings in the Game 6 clincher against Boston in the American League Championship Series.
Garcia followed up that rookie season by going 15-8 with a 3.72 ERA in 2022, tying for fourth in the AL in wins. The journey back from Tommy John surgery is arduous, but the Astros have had pitchers like Verlander and McCullers come back from the procedure in recent seasons. “You just hate for a young guy to go through that,” Baker said. “But I’ve seen guys come back better and throwing harder when they come back. If anybody can come back, he knows how to train and we have some guys here who have had it and they can help him get through this.”
