You didn’t know there’s a student seat on the powerful LAUSD Board? And 17-year-old Karen Ramirez hopes to be heard.
Karen Ramirez, 17, often advocates for her peers at Girls Academic Leadership Academy in Wilshire District, and this fall she will become Los Angeles Unified School District Board’s student member, bringing her passion for youth activism as she navigates the acronyms, budgets and policies that face the school board.
Unlike most teens, this summer won’t be much of a break—she’ll be spending her time off reading LAUSD board resolutions and the district’s 2022-2026 Strategic Plan to get prepared for her new role. LAUSD Student Empowerment Unit Administrator Lorena Franco, whose office oversees the student board member elections and youth involvement in the district, said her team is “very happy for Karen” and that she’s an “amazing student leader.”
