A sombre start to Women's Month as veteran actress Connie Chiume dies at 72
Veteran actress Connie Chiume in one of the stunning garments that have made her the queen of the red carpet.Women’s Month has suddenly turned bleak for South Africa’s film and television industry as the sun on Tuesday, 6 August, sets on veteran actress Connie Chiume.
Chiume will be remembered for the precision with which she naturally transitioned from a family woman Mamokete in Rhythm City to hardcore criminal Mam' Sonto in Gomora. From earling R101 as a teacher in Soweto, a life changing opportunity located her in the form of a callout for musicians, singers and actors to audition advertised on her local newspaper.I had never been in showbiz, let alone received any sort of acting training. I went to the audition and was told that I was shortlisted.
A stylish queen, Chiume was also known for kicking the red carpet’s butt with her showstopping designer garments at social gatherings. The gold gown she rocked at last year’s Essence Festival of Culture in New Orleans, US, took African fashion design to a new level on international platforms. The versatile actress has played a multitude of roles from her Safta recognition as Stella Moloi in Zone 14 to a no-nonsense crime headliner Sonto in Gomora.
She also featured in the original Losing Lerato film in 2019, which recently released part 2. Before finding her footing on the big and small screen, Chiume was a stage goddess trotting the globe with the production Ipi Intombi. The article will be updated with more details once it becaomes available.Who we choose to trust can have a profound impact on our lives.
