The appearance of this pub has changed since this picture was taken by it remains a popular place to visit for a drink or a meal.
The Watford Observer is delighted to share pictures from the archive at Watford Museum and this week we recall how The Royal Oak looked between the wars.
The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “The Royal Oak, in Watford Heath,was possibly built in the early 1800s to replace a cottage that had already been on the site. “Originally a beer house, one of the earliest known landlords, according to an 1855 Post Office Directory, was T. Bates. He had been landlord of the Load of Hay, also in Wattford Heath, since at least 1851.“Another Post Office Directory from later in the 1800s names Daniel Ford as landlord; he is also recorded here in the census.“Sadly, it is not known who the people in this 1920s or 1930s photo are.
