Some drivers believe their car will warn them if they are about to hit a pedestrian, one safety expert says.
One other, less cynical, factor that may be involved: Many more expensive cars come equipped with advanced safety features that may lead drivers into a false sense of security.
Some drivers believe their car will warn them if they are about to hit a pedestrian, Greg Brannon, American Automobile Association safety expert, told USA TODAY. That level of confidence is a mistake, he warned.Brannon, who was not involved in the new study, says that pedestrian safety is “an absolute crisis.”
The new study cited rising pedestrian fatalities as a reason for examining driver behaviors. In addition to studying car value, researchers looked at the role of race and gender in pedestrian safety. The filmed research involved observing 461 cars in the Las Vegas area. After study participants attempted to cross midblock crosswalks, researchers analyzed whether cars yielded or not.
They estimated the Kelly Blue Book value of the vehicles and found the correlation between vehicle value and yielding behavior. Participants were crossing the road correctly, and yet researchers saw clear evidence of a troubling trend: “You can see what people think … that cars rule the road,” Coughenour said.Contributing: Jordan Culver
