There was a time not many years ago where the patch of yellowed grass amid the four fields at the farthest boundaries of the Padres’ complex was the place to be. But now that it’s the only place to be, what is happening here seems relatively trivial. So there were far fewer luxury cars in the players’ parking lot and no fans admitted to watch workouts Monday. Peoria Stadium was empty instead of hosting a game between the Padres and Mariners, as the initial schedule dictated.
