The A’s place Seth Brown (strained oblique) on the injured list but rather than call up an outfielder, promote Las Vegas shortstop Kevin Smith.
The Athletics placed Seth Brown on the 10-day injured list Monday with a strained left oblique and recalled infielder Kevin Smith from Triple-A Las Vegas to take his place on the roster.
Brown, the A’s home run and RBI leader last season, was being given a chance to play regularly and face left-handed pitching instead of being platooned as he has for the most part since 2019. The Athletics, 2-7, were outscored 31-5 in the three games against unbeaten Tampa Bay and will take on Baltimore in a four-game series at Camden Yards.
Brown also hit a drive to the fence with two out in the ninth against Cleveland left-hander Tim Herrin only to be robbed of a potential game-winner on a leaping catch by Cleveland center fielder Myles Straw.
