'A ring you can wear anywhere': Dale West's 1966 Grey Cup ring is simple, but packed with meaning CFL

He’s watched championship rings grow bigger and flashier through the years and decades since he earned his in 1966. Simplicity was abandoned for heft and shine, but the idea is the same: This is a permanent token of the year you won the Grey Cup, so wear it well.We deliver the local news you need in these turbulent times on weekdays at 3 p.m.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

Dale West with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the 1960s. Courtesy of Saskatchewan Sports Hall of FameWest is a Saskatchewan man — grew up in Saskatoon, resides in Regina, and spent his entire professional career with the Roughriders. He understands very well the pull of that Grey Cup, because even now, with his 80th birthday passed, he still thinks about moments from that 29-14 win over the Ottawa Rough Riders.

He remembers those long touchdowns vividly: On the first, he figured Ottawa quarterback Russ Jackson was going to run, “thought instead of reacted,” and Tucker ran past him for a 61-yard touchdown catch. “It is what it is — the guys you’re playing with, you can’t hide that. They all know. There’s no sense in saying, ‘Oh, it wasn’t my fault.’ I should have done better. And that’s the way it is. If there wasn’t a mistake in a football game, there would be no scoring at all. A missed tackle, a bad read on a pass play, an interception, a fumble. If there wasn’t those things, I think the game would be pretty boring.
