The White House is grappling with the same calculation as every other workplace facing the coronavirus: whether to close the doors and work remotely
The White House, like the rest of the federal government, has been encouraged to review OPM guidelines and consider how many people are needed to make an office function. The notion of restricting non-essential travel for government employees also came up during one meeting of the White House-assembled coronavirus task force, with no resolution. One official said there’s no immediate need to change or modify the working hours of the Executive Office of the President.
The coronavirus task force, which includes representatives from across the government, has encouraged the general public to practice social distancing and look at their telework guidelines. The guidelines were part of the task force’s recommendations for Seattle and Santa Clara County, Calif., two places the virus has hit hard.
Late Monday, the Securities and Exchange Commission, a financial regulator, said employees had been told to telework until further notice after one employee was treated for respiratory symptoms and tested for coronavirus. The agency insisted it could still “fully” operate under such circumstances.
