Born and raised in Montreal, the only child of a well-to-do family, Dunn had become a stockbroker, and increased the family fortune through shrewd investments. In 1978, two years after the separatist Parti Québécois came to power, Dunn and his mother, uneasy about their status as English-speakers, moved to a property that Dunn’s grandmother had bought as a vacation home, just across the Canadian border in Vermont.
