“I have a lot of confidence in myself that I can be really good and help this team out a lot this year.” That was a point Donaldson made here at TD Ballpark on Sunday, after watching that ball whizz by him for the strikeout. When the Bringer of Rain was in Dunedin for a rebab assignment while recovering from a calf strain in 2018, he recalls facing Pearson on a back field at the team’s training facility.

One of those areas to improve was to become more than just a big arm with high velocity. As Donaldson notes, that heat is still impressive from a pitcher, just not as unique as it was as recently as a few years back. “it just comes with experience,” the Florida native says. “If everything went smoothly I’d probably be the same prospect kid coming up. But given everything that’s been going on, I’ve just rolled with the punches, worked hard, kept the head down and things will work out.”
