The greatest risk to national interests in South Africa is high levels of un-patriotism. High levels of unemployment, poverty and deepening inequality, breeds and incubates an insecurity that explains why many citizens do not feel patriotic, argues Sylvester Sithole.
National patriotism, a key element of national cohesion, is one of the key pillars of national interests and national security of all states, and pluralistic South Africa in particular, argues the author.
In my colleague Professor Chris Landsberg’s analysis, common elements of national interest include but not limited to:If the economic well-being of South Africans is considered as one of the most critical drivers of patriotism, a 32.9% unemployment defines a fractured sense of loyalty to a succeeding nation-building project.
The failure to genuinely translate South African patriotism beyond sporting events,"Buy-SA" branding, and public holidays is encapsulated in Frantz Fanon’s analysis that: With so many Zimbabweans in this country and with so many problems engulfing that country, you would expect these people to be providing us with every detail of how evil the leadership is, but they don’t do that…This is something South Africans are lacking: a love for our country and our land. When outsiders criticise this country and its people, we are the first to join in and add more criticism. We lack pride in ourselves as a people and a nation.
