AppleTree Schools, a network of prekindergarten charter campuses, opened in Spring Valley this year.

Sparked, in part, by parent demand for more prekindergarten seats, the school — situated in an office building on a cafe-lined stretch of Massachusetts Avenue — opened this year, making it Ward 3’s only charter school. The number of applications for pre-K3 in Ward 3 has more than doubled since 2014, the earliest year of publicly availableParents have criticized a dearth of options in the city’s preschool program, which is intended to be universal.
Miles said the school tries to bring in families from outside Ward 3 through its relationships with current parents, as well as advertisements on buses and in bus shelters in other parts of the city. Attendance there, as in all charter schools, is free.
