Mike Wallace Is Here takes a revealing look at the 60 Minutes newsman who spent half a century interviewing the world’s most influential people.
Around three years ago director Avi Belkin was living in Tel Aviv and thinking about how journalism had become such a mess. “It was before before Trump got elected,” says Belkin. “I was obsessing about how journalism found itself at the tipping point and was sort of a cluster f#*k.”Marion Curtis / StarPix for Magnolia Pictures
He began his research, looking for a genesis story to tell about broadcast journalism. Over and over he came upon Mike Wallace interviewing influential people. “He was kind of a Zelig/ Forrest Gump character. He was in all the right intersections,” explains Belkin. So through the lens of Mike Wallace he set out to tell a bigger story of broadcast journalism..
Throughout the film Belkin masterfully reveals Wallace on the giving and receiving end of those no-holds-barred questions, that made Wallace’s style so groundbreaking. Wallace managed to be aggressive in his reporting style and made it seem so effortless at the same time. “He invented the tough question and Broadcast journalist magazine with Don Hewitt,” observes Belkin. “It’s incredible how much he influenced journalism.”vault, he was most surprised to see Wallace’s vulnerable side.
