There are long stories about how they became our daughters, and the process was gradual. But at some point, it hit us – especially me. These women needed older, safe people in their lives who could bring some stability and wisdom – and especially a father figure. Too often, we are stuck on our biological family and miss God having another family assignment for us.You may not have a divinity degree, but you’re the one who can minister to the young, to the elderly, to those with special needs and those who are hurting.
If we had a mess of a father, we can think, “All I learned from that guy is what not to do!” There is some value in those heart-breaking lessons.1. Look for reasons to praise your children. Not phony, but real. Little things complimented by a father can be a big thing to a child. 4. Watch your tone of voice. Even with my 40-something-year-old daughters during an emotional discussion, I’m offering up a mental prayer, “Lord, help me to keep my voice quiet,” even if general volume is rising.
7. Remember that God is willing to forgive you, even if some people in your life refuse to do so. I sometimes tell others, “Quit beating yourself up and look up.”
