His Vienna museum is transformed and a secret of the couch is confirmed.
, Berggasse 19 reopened in 2020 after 18-month-long major renovations.
And after a decade, here I was in May in Vienna again. I’d written about Freud previously in my memoir,. I decided to undertake an updated tour of Freud’s Vienna, starting here in Part One with his Museum, then in Part Two, revisiting his haunts and related sites. The Renovated ShrineOne enters Berggasse 19 today through a bright new Freud-centric bookstore and a cafe area, to then climb the stairs to the famous office.
Through double doors stands the sanctum sanctorum of the “talking cure,” the consulting room—much reconfigured now.’s somber black and white photographs of it on the eve of forced exile, along with crowding texts and artifact displays—giving a sense of the “opium den” congestion of antiquities and carpets that made Robert Lustig, Freud’s principal antiquities purveyor, gape in astonishment.
“But the renovation architect and I agreed,” explains Monika Pessler, museum director since 2014, accompanying me, “that the main thing on exhibit is this building itself.” Because Berggasse 19 is a site of catastrophic absences, the first being the exile to London in 1938 of Freud and family, with his professional furniture and vast collections of books and antiquities struggled along.
The consulting room today resembles a white-walled art installation space. The absent couch is indicated by a grayish area on the back wall where it stood in 1938, with holes preserved where carpeting behind the couch was pinned. An enlarged detail from Engelmann’s couch photo is shown beside, while a double-page-sized copy of Engelman’s panorama of this area sits on vertical shafts, for the viewer to conjure up the old scene in their “inner eye,” as Pessler puts it.
