REVIEW | A deep dive into self: Hedley Twidle weaves a rich tapestry of essays in Show Me the Place

After attending the recent Kingsmead Book Fair, I met up with some fellow writers for supper. We spoke about what we were working on, and I mentioned the essays I was writing and reading. I love the genre, but mostly read essays published overseas because there is such a small market for them here.

“Who writes essays?” One writer asked and then mentioned Hedley Twidle’s name. Yes, I said, he does write essays, having recently read his latest collection,. We then bandied around some of the big writer names – André P Brink, J.M. Coetzee, Shubnum Khan - and then hit a blank when trying to name South African essayists. A pity that because the essay form is such a supple and fine form and stretches from academic essays to personal ones, to lyric essays to braided essays, and more.
