“Big companies in the Philippines find a way, no matter how good a worker is, to end his/her contract after six months,” Calvento said.
“The only thing worse than having to go to work,” my father used to say, “is not having work to go to.” As usual, the old man was wrong. Many things are worse than having to go to work; by now, my father is well acquainted with several of them. Still, I understood what he meant, and I think that Vangie, the protagonist of Sonny Calvento’s short film “Excuse Me, Miss, Miss, Miss,” would, too.
Alas, that dream soon becomes a reality, when she is summarily fired by her boss, the abusive Ma’am Charo . After dressing down Vangie’s co-workers for various offenses , Ma’am Charo summons Vangie to her office, where she spits out, “You’re a disappointment!” Then, while riding an exercise bike with the energy of a demon, she forces Vangie to watch a kind of lowlight reel, assembled from CCTV footage, of some of Vangie’s worst moments as an employee.
The timing is no coincidence. “Excuse Me”—the first Filipino short film to have competed at Sundance—hints that the real reason for Vangie’s dismissal may lie not in her supposedly disappointing performance but, rather, in her status as a contractual employee. In the Philippines, when a contract worker reaches the six-month mark, she must be offered a more permanent position, with benefits and a salary.
