A 'cannibal' solar ejection could trigger a strong storm on Earth in the coming days that could require some power voltage systems to be corrected and make northern lights visible outside of their usual realm.

A"cannibal" solar ejection heading straight for Earth could bring northern lights as far south as Illinois and trigger power voltage issuesThe sun could be sending a storm to Earth over the next few days. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration , our fiery star spit out a series of bursts on Sunday that are now headed in the direction of our planet and could trigger a strong geomagnetic storm.

One of those bursts, called a coronal mass ejection, or CME, is expected to collide and consume another, creating what's called a cannibal CME event. According to The Weather Channel, these events can spark strong geomagnetic storms — and in this case, it's headed in our direction. This 2004 image from NASA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory shows a solar flare, at right, erupting from giant sunspot 649, hurling a coronal mass ejection into space.NOAA expects that the CMEs will hit on Thursday, but before they do, the agency said that Earth will also be blasted on Wednesday with relatively fast solar winds, known as a recurrent coronal hole high speed stream.

G1-G3 Watches are in effect for 17-19 August, 2022 due to likely CH HSS and CME influences. There is too much information to tweet about this activity - so please visit our webpage story at
