Rick and Judy took full advantage of the opportunity to visit with their grandson and daughter-in-law, Victoria, at their Stittsville home, a long slap shot away from where they lived in Kanata 30 years ago. “I remember Alfie, when I was a kid, from his first training camp,” said Ryan. “I would have been about 12 years old back then.”

After being fired by the Senators, he spent two years as head coach of the New York Islanders, seven seasons as an assistant coach with the Phoenix Coyotes, seven more as an assistant and associate coach with the Vancouver Canucks and an additional five seasons as an assistant and associate with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

“I’ve never watched so many Senators games since I coached them, and that includes a lot of years,” said Rick, laughing. “I try to watch as many as I can.”
