The first event in 2013 attracted about 600 climbers. It now has 1,000 from across Texas and the U.S., puffing and sweating to commemorate the fallen.

It was Rendon’s third year participating in the San Antonio 110 9/11 Memorial Climb, scaling the stairwell of the Tower of the Americas twice, in a symbolic act of remembrance, while carrying his helmet, oxygen tank and other gear. “Today, we remember that we made a promise so many years ago, a promise to never forget. And we are honored that so many of you still choose to stay true to that promise alongside us this year,” event founder and director Dawn Solinski, a retired San Antonio firefighter, told the crowd during a somber opening ceremony.
