Inefficient and understaffed police call centres are eroding public trust in the South African Police Service, experts have warned.Inefficient and understaffed police call centres are eroding public trust in the South African Police Service , experts have warned, and this could be impacting police operations.

DA spokesperson Andrew Whitfield said the police's 10111 call centres were in a"state of crisis" after it was revealed in a parliamentary question that only 40% of posts at call centres were filled. He said this resulted in more than seven million calls being dropped. "The 10111 number is for any emergency that requires a police response, but more than seven million calls being dropped highlights that understaffed call centres are not even able to answer calls from South Africans under threat of violence by criminals," said Whitfield.Get 14 days free to read all our investigative and in-depth journalism.
