The coronavirus pandemic is putting an unprecedented amount of Americans out of work. While the federal government has stepped in to provide, its guidance on how independent contractors, freelancers and gig workers are eligible remains scarce. Organizations and individuals are stepping in to fill the gaps. Numerous resources for independent workers offer information on how they can secure COVID-19 assistance during this unprecedented time, whether it’s through explaining relevant federal aid programs or listing outside grants or mutual aid funds. Many also offer information on how to keep businesses afloat, whether that be through helpful tutorials for transitioning to online-based services or posting open job listings.
Here are six resources to check out if you’re an independent worker who needs help during the coronavirus crisis:Freelancers Union, founded in 1995, provides policy advocacy and insurance benefits for independent workers. On its page, you’ll find information about government relief programs and how they apply to freelancers, health insurance updates, housing protection measures and more.
Becoming a member of Freelancers Union is free, and includes access to an insurance benefit marketplace, networking events and training opportunities. But you don’t have to become a member to explore Freelancers Union’s COVID-19 resources. The website states its COVID-19 resource page will be updated as new information becomes available.
