The impeachment trial of President Donald J. Trump, only the third such trial in American history, began on Tuesday, in a seemingly endless session, and is scheduled to wrap up next week . To refresh your recollection: In December, the Democratic-majority House of Representatives voted two articles of impeachment: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The house can impeach a president, but it takes two-thirds of the senate to vote to throw one out, hence the current trial.

If you are watching this unfold for the better portion of every day, it may seem that you are drowning in a flood of irrefutable evidence that nails the commander-in-chief. But alas, this overwhelming abundance of information may well be ignored by Republican senators who will not vote to impeach no matter what. Some are up for re-election in deep red districts; some might be terrified of Trump and his tweets.

In the constant gush of words during this historic trial, it may be difficult to discern what will be forgotten and what will live on in the hearts of minds and listeners forever. Is there anything in the Democrats' eloquence that could sway Republicans? Will the president’s lawyers deliver a memorable defense? Here's what to watch out for from this point onward.

The current wisdom is that the Republicans most likely to flip would include the phlegmatic Susan Collins; Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski—so strong in her state she won as a write-in candidate; sometime Trump critic Mitt Romney; and Lamar Alexander, whoTuesday that he’d be open to considering whether to consider witnesses. It is also possible that a) more than four will switch sides or that b) none of these people will in fact vote to hear witnesses.
