We are aware of a rumor that is circulating - we want to assure everyone our tigers are all accounted for and safe here at the Zoo. We saw messages online and heard from concerned local neighbors and wanted to set minds at ease about your Dallas Zoo!There is no statewide law forbidding Texans from owning tigers. Individual cities can decide to ban dangerous wild animals within their borders, with counties making the call for unincorporated areas.
Keeping pet tigers is prohibited by the cities of Dallas and Houston, for example, but you’re welcome to keep such an animal in unincorporated Harris County, as long it is at least 1,000 feet from other residences, schools and day care centers.in Texas include cheetahs, cougars, gorillas, lions and bears. Endangered species, such as wolves, indigenous birds and bats, are not permitted to be kept as pets.
There also are caging requirements: A single tiger must have at least 300 square feet of space and an 8-foot fence if the cage is covered. Enclosures large than 1,000 square feet may be uncovered but must have taller walls at least 12- or 16-feet tall, depending on how they are built. The registration agency’s staff or a licensed veterinarian must have access to the animal and its enclosure for routine inspection.
