Semien started all 162 regular season games at second base, and played an MLB-high and franchise-record 1,406 1/3 innings at the position. His 16 defensive runs saved were a career-high and ranked second among AL second baseman behind Cleveland’s Andrés Giménez, who’s also a finalist for the award. His defensive WAR ranked fifth among all AL fielders, regardless of position. Giménez and Houston’s Mauricio Dubón are the two other finalists.
García’s strong arm in right field left would-be base runners reconsidering their options throughout the season. His team-best 11 outfield assists tied for third-most in the AL, and it was his third-straight season with 10 or more. His defensive runs saved and ultimate zone rating both ranked third in baseball among right fielders. The other two finalists are Houston’s Kyle Tucker and Boston’s Alex Verdugo.
