, which basically states that first impressions impact the lens through which people see you in the future.

Over our combined 60 years as professors and consultants, we’ve seen many impressive students head off to new positions as proud young professionals, some of whom ring us up a year later to “chat.” These conversations inevitably include missteps and harsh lessons learned, often driven by self-sabotaging habits for which they’re seeking advice.

Based on these conversations, we’ve organized the most common missteps we hear about into five broad categories, and added a bit of advice for each one. If any of this sounds familiar to you, get out of your own way. The sooner you do, the better.Three months after joining a regulatory firm as a bank examiner, a former MBA student was performing well and delivering great results. One of his assignments was recognized as outstanding. His firm had a “Hall of Fame” with plaques along one wall.

At the same time, you must be extra mindful of your tone when pitching new solutions to old problems, particularly among more senior colleagues. We have often heard from our former students that their efforts to make contributions or shed light on what they see as obvious issues are interpreted as condescending and met with defensiveness. Some of their genuine observations seem haughty instead of curious.

This isn’t good for anyone. For your colleagues, they miss out on a potentially great idea. For you, it’s not a great first impression. While you can’t control how your colleagues react, you can mitigate the issue by picking your moment and expressing your idea humbly to a senior colleague in private. Start by acknowledging that you’re new but that you have some ideas about the problem, and want to discuss them with someone more experienced who better understands the context.

Self-Reliance Is The Only Way Forward In A Post-Pandemic World | HackerNoonSelf-Reliance Is The Only Way Forward In A Post-Pandemic World | HackerNoonIf one of the latest reports by The Economist is to be believed, a major consequence of the pandemic would be the integration of data-enabled services into broader aspects of life.
