While focusing on Rocky Jr. rather than Rocky is the glaring character omission, The Karate Kid's representation wasn't perfect either. From Macchio's description, it seems like the film would have focused more on Daniel LaRusso's daughter than it did Daniel LaRusso himself. While Daniel does have a daughter in Cobra Kai, she wasn't around in 2012, meaning that Daniel's daughter would have been a completely original character.
While both of these styles of fighting work well for their respective franchises, it's hard to imagine how they would work in a big crossover movie. It's possible that the film could have leaned more heavily toward one fighting style, as Daniel's daughter and Rocky Jr. were going to open up a dojo. While this would fix the problem of them meshing, it would create a balance problem, making it seem as if The Karate Kid was getting more representation than Rocky.
