5 easy-to-do things to not only get you through your post-holiday blues but also to help you excel and achieve long-term success:
Looking around your office. You probably notice a bunch of cranky and unhappy people. They wear their disenchantment and discouragement on their sleeves. They’ll complain about everyone and everything. It's the easy thing to do and the path of least resistance.
Seek out mentors at work who can offer advice and counsel. Ask a colleague out for lunch or coffee. Introduce yourself to employees in different divisions. Offer to mentor a protégé to help show him the ropes. Make sure that you treat everyone equally from the janitor to the CEO. You never know who will have their eyes and ears open to tell you about a great new opportunity or put in a good word for you to the right person.
This may entail going back to school, attaining new credentials and certifications, going to networking events and conferences and being an avid reader. Raise your hand and volunteer for tough assignments. Ask to join a team that’s working on an interesting project. Find people in a similar line of work at other companies. You can share knowledge, job leads and discuss current and possible future trends that may help or hinder your career advancement.
Politely excuse yourself from this entirely. There is nothing to be gained by staying with people who don’t have your best interest at heart. Especially avoid those who delight in seeing someone else fail.Complacency is a career killer. It's easy to get yourself into a rut, even if you are paid well and relatively happy. If you keep doing the same exact thing, you’ll never learn new skills. You’ll stagnate and your ability to break out of your bubble will atrophy.
