James Cameron's Avatar: The Way of Water has shattered box office records since its release, including passing his most famous film of all time.

James Cameron's Avatar: The Way Of The Water has been smashing box office records left and right since its December 26th, 2022 release. The film came about after the success of the first Avatar film, which was released way back in 2009. Avatar became the highest-grossing film of all time, knocking Titanic down to #2, and it stayed there for 10 years until Avengers: Endgame took its place in 2019.

Cameron's film, The Terminator , brought in $4 million, The Abyss grossed $9.3 million, Terminator 2: Judgment Day rose to $31.8 million, True Lies came in at $25.9 million, and despite being the highest grossing movie for over a decade, Titanic only grossed $28.6 million opening weekend. Of course, it's important to account for inflation, but $134 million is a huge leap from the $4 million James Cameron's early movies 39 years ago.

The Top Gun sequel was released on May 27th, 2022, and for months it seemed nothing could top it. Not even Jurassic World Dominion, which also surpassed $1 billion for the year, could earn higher than the Tom Cruise film. However, Cameron's hard work and dedication to his sci-fi film paid off, and despite being released only two weeks before the end of the year, Cameron knocked Cruise's highest-grossing film out of the #1 spot.

2 James Cameron Is The Only Director To Land Three Films Above $2 Billion When Avatar: The Way Of The Water hit $2 billion, Cameron achieved something no other director has, with three films surpassing the $2 billion mark. The Avatar director currently has three films in the top five at the box office and is the only director to do so.
