Trey Lance’s homecoming to Minnesota produces mixed results in the 49ers’ practice against the Vikings, but he and Deebo Samuel are connecting better than ever this camp.
Fireworks were scarce from Lance and the 49ers’ offense. Team sessions closed with red zone work and the two-minute drill, neither of which produced a touchdown. But here’s what is noteworthy: Lance’s most frequent target was Samuel. Is that connection heating up?
“Yeah, I felt like we’re always hot,” Lance replied. “He’s done a great job the last few days. The more reps, the more we get to watch stuff together.” They’ll like what they see from a fourth-down conversion in the two-minute drill. Lance rolled out to his right, away from a collapsing pocket, and, rather than keep running, he spotted Samuel, who stopped his route in an open window. Boom, connection made. Fist bumps exchanged afterward.
Lance threw behind Samuel earlier but the All-Pro receiver made the catch. To maximize Samuel and the offense, Lance needs to be more on target. “You get guys in space, the better you hit them in stride, the more ,” Shanahan said.The 49ers’ offensive line struggled to protect Lance, and basically each lineman had a play or two they’d like back, including Trent Williams’ matchup with Za’Darius Smith.
Safety Jimmie Ward expressed optimism that Sunday’s hamstring strain won’t rule him out of the season opener. George Odum took some first-team snaps in his place Wednesday and intercepted a Kirk Cousins pass intended for Dalvin Cook.
